Free Solid Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Looking for a free solid granny square pattern? You’re in the right place. This beginner-friendly pattern is completely free, easy to follow, and makes a solid granny square that actually looks modern instead of like your grandmother’s afghan from 1987. (Though honestly, those were pretty great too.)

This pattern works for blankets, bags, and anything else you want to actually finish. No weird color changes, no holes, no gaps – just a sturdy, beginner-friendly solid square that keeps the chaos to a minimum while your drunk toddler hands figure out what they’re doing.

This is one of the easiest free granny square patterns for beginners because it’s literally just one color and one type of stitch repeated until you’re done

When someone says “granny square,” what pops into your head? For me, it was an aggressively ugly orange blanket that lived on the back of my grandmother’s sofa and got dragged out at every family gathering. Hideous? Absolutely. Warm enough to forgive all of its crimes? Also yes. Did my toes poke out of every hole, nook and cranny. Again, yes.

Granny squares have gotten a bad rap over the years — outdated, old-school, not exactly modern. But crochet has had a glow-up, and granny squares came with it. These days, they’re cleaner, more polished, and actually fun to use.

This solid granny square keeps the charm without the gaps — no lacy holes, just a sturdy, beginner-friendly square that works beautifully for blankets, bags, and anything else you want to actually use.
