Free Crochet Cup Cozy Pattern (With Built-In Coaster)
Your coffee is getting cold.
Not because you forgot about it. Because you set it down to fix one more row, finish one more round, deal with whatever crisis your WIP is currently having. And now it’s lukewarm and you’re staring at it with genuine resentment.
A cup cozy fixes exactly this problem. It keeps your mug insulated while you crochet, stares back at you with the energy of “I was made in 20 minutes,” and is genuinely one of the fastest finished objects you can make without feeling like you cheated. We’re talking 6 rounds and 12 rows. You could knock this out before your next cup of coffee goes cold. (Ironic, I know.)
PS. I encourage you to get my free beginner crochet guide (for when your stitches look wrong and you’re convinced you’re the problem – you’re not). It’s 35 pages of “Calm down you’re fine” and it’s completely free
Heads up: My posts may contain affiliate links! If you buy something through one of those links, you won’t pay a penny more, but I’ll get a small commission, which helps keep the lights on! Thanks!
This is also the pattern I hand to people who tell me they’re “not ready” for a real project yet. Because here’s the thing: you’re ready. You know single crochet, half double crochet, and how to work in rows. That’s the whole skill set. This pattern uses every stitch you already know and packages it into something you’ll actually use, which means you’re not practicing into a void, you’re making a thing that lives on your desk.
The downloadable PDF version is here for you to download and save in your ever growing file of “patterns to make”. (Add free, printable format, all the good things)
Materials Needed:
Yarn (duh) Any worsted weight #4 yarn will work great. Some great ideas are Red Heart Super Saver, and I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby.
Hook Size: H/8 – 5.0mm
Button: Any small button will work. Use whatever you have on hand!
Abbreviations:
Sc– Single Crochet
Hdc- Half Double Crochet
Sl st– Slip Stitch
Ch- Chain
BLO– Back Loop Only
To Begin:
You’ll start with a magic ring. If that’s the part making you want to quit before you even begin, I wrote a magic ring tutorial that shows you exactly what to do.
Magic Ring–6sc in the ring. Join pull tight, ch1
*If you don’t want to use a magic ring, you can ch3, and join with a sl st to the first chain to form a ring. This technique is used in the solid granny square pattern here. *
Round 1: 2sc in each st around. Join, ch1 (12 stitches)
Round 2: 1sc in first st, 2sc in next stitch, all the way around. Join, ch1. (18 stitches)
Round 3: 1 sc in each of the first 2 st, 2sc in next, all the way around. Join, ch1 (24 stitches)
Round 4: 1sc in each of the first 3 st, 2sc in next, all the way around. Join, ch1 (30 stitches)
Round 5: 1 sc in each of the first 4 st, 2sc in the next, all the way around. Join, ch1 (36 stitches)
Round 6: In blo 1sc in each stitch around. Join, ch1
From this point on, we will be working in rows.
And if you are a visual learner like me, the downloadable PDF pattern gives you step-by-step photos & clear instructions so you’re never guessing what your stitches should look like. So there’s no guesswork!
Row 1: 1 hdc in the first 34 stitches. Leave the last two stitches unworked. Ch1 turn
Row 2-12: 1hdc in every stitch across, ch1 turn.
Row 13: 1sc in each stitch across.
When you come to the end, put three sc in the corner, and continue to work around the piece adding your single crochet border.
Back at the start, ch12 and sc in the same stitch that you started the row in to form a loop. Cut a long string of yarn and thread all the way through the top stitches to the other side.
Attach a button with yarn. Secure and weave in ends.
That’s it. You’re done.
Go pick up that coffee before it gets cold again (the whole point of this exercise, remember?), wrap it in the thing you just made, and feel at least 40% more competent than you did an hour ago. That’s not nothing.
If your cozy came out a little snug or a little loose, that’s a yarn weight issue, not a you issue. Bulkier yarn = bigger cozy. Go up a hook size if the fabric feels stiff and cardboard-like, down a size if it’s so loose your mug is swimming in it.
This pattern also scales embarrassingly well as a gift. Make six in an afternoon. Stick them in a basket with a bag of coffee and call it a present. Nobody needs to know it took less time than a Netflix episode.
When you’re ready to put a border on this thing (yes, even a cozy can have a border, I don’t make the rules), the single crochet border tutorial is right there waiting for you. Check out more Beginner Friendly patterns over in my pattern library!
Happy Hooking!

That is such a clever idea, I love the built in coaster idea, it makes so much sense.
I find often a coaster sticks to the bottom of the mug too sometimes and then drops off as you move it – very annoying!! This solves all that!
I hope you are all keeping well at this difficult time, thank you for joining us at Handmade Monday 🙂
Hi Julie,
Thanks for dropping in! Yes coasters are usually really annoying, and no one ever uses them for all the reasons you said. That’s why I wanted to try to solve that problem with these cozies! I hope to see you popping in again soon.
Amber
