Patriotic Place-mats – A Spectacular Free Pattern You’ll Love!

Reading Time: 5 minutes

I’ve got a great free pattern for some patriotic place-mats and coasters today! Because it’s starting to feel a little bit like summertime around these parts. I don’t know what the weather is doing near you, but I know that it’s making me crave watermelon, lemonade, and a great big swimming pool.

While the swimming pool thing might have to wait until all of this CoVid stuff is over, I do know that I can still do some of my favorite summer things at home. Like BBQ and watermelon, and back porch sitting.

So, to help brighten up our summertime celebrations with Memorial Day and Independence Day coming up, I thought I’d come up with a great free pattern to get us in the mood. (Because who doesn’t love some red, white, and blue!)

Materials Needed:

Yarn: Any worsted weight #4 yarn will work great in Red, White, and Blue. Some great ideas are Red Heart Super Saver, and I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby.

The Amounts will vary depending on tension and whether you decide to do double-stranded or single-stranded. But, for two placemats, and coasters, I ended up using almost 1 full skein each of red and blue, and half a skein of white in Red Heart Super Saver.

Hook: Sizes: I/9 – 5.5mm & H – 5mm

Yarn Needle & Scissors

Abbreviations:

Sc– Single Crochet

Hdc Half Double Crochet

Sl st- Slip Stitch

  3. Tammy says:

I love these. My Coasters came out more rectangle than square. I have the same stitches, same number of rows & double stranded like the instructions. What might I have done wrong?

    • Amber @ Craftaboo says:

      Hi Tammy,

There’s a lot of reasons that your project could be coming out a little different than mine. One thing that immediately springs to mind is maybe a stitch count is missing, or perhaps the tension you’re using isn’t consistent throughout the whole project.

Without seeing your project these are just a couple of possibilities. I”m glad that you enjoyed this pattern, and I’d encourage you to try the coasters again, this time paying close attention to your stitch counts and tension and seeing if that makes a difference.

Please reach out with any other questions!

      Amber
