When someone says “granny square,” what pops into your head? For me, it was an aggressively ugly orange blanket that lived on the back of my grandmother’s sofa and got dragged out at every family gathering. Hideous? Absolutely. Warm enough to forgive all of its crimes? Also yes. Did my toes poke out of every hole, nook and cranny. Again, yes.

Granny squares have gotten a bad rap over the years — outdated, old-school, not exactly modern. But crochet has had a glow-up, and granny squares came with it. These days, they’re cleaner, more polished, and actually fun to use.

This solid granny square keeps the charm without the gaps — no lacy holes, just a sturdy, beginner-friendly square that works beautifully for blankets, bags, and anything else you want to actually use.

Final Thoughts:

Solid granny squares are simple, useful, and way more versatile than they get credit for. Make a few of these and suddenly everything starts looking like a potential project.
