The Scrappy Granny Square Sampler CAL
Raid your stash, learn new granny squares from the same basic stitches shuffled around, and accidentally on purpose make a cozy blanket
Let's Talk About Your Scrap Yarn BIn
You know the one. It’s shoved under the bed or wedged behind the couch, stuffed with half skeins from finished projects, abandoned projects, and projects you’re still lying to yourself about (I have a cardigan from 2019 that is still one sleeve, so zero judgment here).
This CAL is an intervention.
Every week I’m dropping a new granny square, and here’s the trick: they all use the same basic stitches you already know. Chains. Double crochets. A single crochet if I’m feeling spicy. I just shove them around in new orders until they look like nine completely different squares, and you get to feel like a genius for zero extra effort.
Nine weeks, nine squares, and one cozy blanket you made accidentally on purpose out of yarn you already owned, which makes it basically free, which means you can spend that money on more yarn. (I see no flaws in this logic.)
What Exactly is a CAL?
CAL is shorthand for a “Crochet Along”
Never done a CAL? No worries, I’ll break it down here. A crochet along just means a bunch of us make the same project at the same time, one piece at a time, so nobody’s stuck staring at a giant pattern alone at 2 a.m. A new square drops every week, you make it whenever your life allows, and we all show off our progress and help each other when a corner goes sideways.
Fall behind? Nobody’s taking attendance. The squares will wait for you.
How This Whole Thing Works
Every week I’m posting a brand new square pattern on the blog, and I’ll link it right here on this page. Bookmark this page, seriously. I’m talking tattoo it on your forearm, write it on the inside of your yarn bin lid in Sharpie. This is home base, and I refuse to make you dig through my entire site at midnight hunting for Week 4 (I’ve done that on other people’s sites and that’s it’s own special kind of hell.)
The same day the new square drops, I go live on TikTok. I’ll be the one with a Diet Coke the size of my head, holding up the finished square so you can see what we’re aiming for.
Then I start the brand new square right there on camera and we stitch it together round by round. All while I narrate my bad decisions and my dog, Madame Derp a Lot, tries to lie directly on the working yarn.
This is the time to ask me anything, and show me your wonky corners. I promise mine have been worse.
No sign-ups needed. No emails. No hoops to jump through. Just show up when you can, grab whatever yarn is closest, and make the damn thing.
The Schedule
Every new square drops on Saturday right here on this page. And I also then go live on TikTok at 6:30 pm (MST, 7:30 pm CST). My handle over there is @craftaboo. (I know, so original!) I’m there live to start making this square with you and answer all the questions. Make sure to bring your hook, your yarn, and whatever caffeinated beverage gets you through a corner.
The plan is to have every square, every join, and the border finished by December 19, which gives you almost a whole week to wrap it up for someone you lovw. (or to wrap yourself in it on Christmas morning and refuse to share. Which is also a valid option).
Will we actually make it? Probably. Maybe. I’ve been wrong before. Maybe we need some Christmas magic? Anyone know Santa?

Supplies List
Here’s the deal. Pick one solid color to be the star of the show, the one that shows up in every single square and holds this whole scrappy circus together, so grab something you’ve got a lot of (I went with plain white Red Heart Super Saver because apparently I own nine thousand skeins of it).
Then go dig through your scrap bin for the accents. Mustard, hot pink, that weird olive green you bought in 2017 and never touched. All of it counts. Your blanket does not have to look like mine, and honestly I’d be a little disappointed if it did.
Got nothing in the stash? That’s what my Amazon storefront is for. Zero judgment.
Everything in this list is clickable and takes you over to my Amazon storefront.
- Worsted weight yarn (your main color)
- Worsted weight yarn in any accent colors (scraps and leftovers totally count)
- H hook (5 mm)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
- Measuring tape (squares finish at 17 inches, blanket at about 55 inches)
Show Me Your Spin!
I want to see every single square you make. The perfect ones. The wonky ones. The one where you swear the corner fought back.
Post it on TikTok, tag me @craftaboo, and throw #ScrappyGrannyCAL on it so I can find you. I’ll be stalking that hashtag like it owes me money (in the most supportive way possible).
And if you’re hanging out in the live Saturday night, tell me in the chat what colors you picked so I can lose my absolute mind over them. (And then send me a DM so I can geek out!)
Hope to see you in our Scrappy Granny CAL!
