Note: If you need to learn the stitches that are used in this pattern, you can catch all the lessons (including videos) in the Rookies Learn to Crochet series right here on the blog by clicking here.

Each week I will present a new lesson, which will build on the skills and techniques we’ve learned from the previous lesson.  By the end of this series you will have learned and (hopefully) mastered the following basic skills:

  • Chaining,
  • Single Crochet
  • Adding a Border,
  • Half Double Crochet
  •  Double Crochet,
  • Triple Crochet,
  • Changing Color,
  • Finishing off and Weaving in Ends.

Learning these basic stitches and techniques are essential in most crochet patterns. Once you have learned these, the sky is the limit as far as what you can create!

We all learn differently, and I’m here to try and help in as many different formats as possible. So if you have any questions while you’re learning, please drop a comment below.

Rookies Learn to Crochet Episode 4—The Half Double Crochet Stitch

This week’s episode is learning the half double crochet stitch. Today we will learn:
  • Working into your foundation chain stitch
  • Making the half double crochet
  • Explanation of how to keep the edges of your project straight

Let’s dive in!

From your previous lesson, you have already completed the foundation chain stitches. We’re going to be working the half double crochet stitches into these foundation stitches and building our project.

Working into the chain is one of the most awkward things you’ll do as a crocheter. It takes a little bit of practice to get a feel for it, but keep at it, and I promise you’ll get it!

To learn how to do the half double crochet stitch, check out the YouTube Tutorial that I have posted for you.

If you have any questions, please let me know and I’ll be there to help you out!
Another great project is coming next week that will put all of your skills to the test.
So stay tuned for that!
Happy Crocheting!
